I think the only correct answer here must be:

“It depends.”

Here some perspectives to think about.

If you plan to use Piwik PRO’s consent management features, you’ll also need to use Piwik PRO for tag management.

They are very well integrated, and I also prefer to use Piwik PRO’s consent management when using Piwik PRO for tag management.

If you plan to implement advertising tracking, you can do it also with Piwik PRO tag manager.

You certainly need some javascript for this, but the implementation is pretty similar to what you’ve always done with GTM.

On the other hand, if you already have a complicated advertising tracking setup built with GTM, it might be best to stay with GTM.

But if your GTM container is full of ancient tags from the last five to six years, migrating to a new tag management tool is also an opportunity to clean the container.

If your data protection officer or local data protection authorities told you to remove Google’s and Meta’s scripts from your site, Piwik PRO is the logical choice also for tag management.

What about the features, then?

GTM has many features we can still only dream about with Piwik PRO.

For example, workspaces are not available in Piwik PRO tag manager. I would also like to give names to different published container versions and add my comments to them.

And of course, there are not nearly as many templates available for Piwik PRO as there are for GTM.

And if you want to have server side tag manager, then you’re out of luck with Piwik PRO tag manager. You need serverside Google Tag Manager.

But most of the time, Piwik PRO is more than “good enough” for me.

Because of this, in most cases I choose Piwik PRO tag manager for analytics implementation.

But in some cases, I have chosen Google Tag Manager.

In those cases, we always have a dual tracking implementation: both Google Analytics and Piwik PRO have been implemented on the site.

So it is really up to you.
